Laptop LCD Replacement Guidelines

September 07th, 2008
by Fred Roe

What happens when your relatively new laptop gets a crack in the LCD. Do you throw the thing away or can you get it fixed?

In the past it was very, very expensive to replace the LCD screen. So much so that it was more cost effective to just go ahead and replace the entire laptop. With the right resources however you can replace a LCD screen cheaply and effectively.

One of the largest factors in replacing the LCD is the size and quality of the screen you’re replacing. Replacement LCD’s can be as cheap at $140 for a small 12 inch screen, and go as high as $400 for a high quality 17″ screen. The average seems to be right around $200 give or take $50.

There are many different places to buy your replacement laptop screen. There are a few really good LCD superstores like LCDSuper.com that offer very competitive pricing on LCD Screens. Ebay and craigslist remain viable alternatives. And using google shopping can often find very reasonable alternatives.

The LCD itself is only one factor in the overall cost of replacing the screen. You’ll have to consider what it takes to replace that screen. I highly recommend NOT doing it yourself. One inadvertent thumb in the wrong place can effectively ruin your laptop.

A qualified computer repair technician can usually replace the LCD screen in as little as an hour. Each laptop model unfortunately is different, so it may take longer depending on what it takes to get the screen apart.

If for some reason you decide to attempt the repair yourself, you should start by trying to find the repair guide for your particular model. Doing an internet search for “laptop repair guide” should help you find different guides posted on the internet.

At a minimum before you get started, you’ll have to weigh the costs of replacing the LCD with replacements costs for the entire laptop. Laptops are cheaper than ever before. You’ll have to weigh that against the inconvenience of starting to use a new laptop without your favorite programs or bookmarks. In any case if you have any specific questions about laptop LCD repairs, feel free to email us.

How to run Age Of Empires 2 on Asus Eee - Fix DirectDraw startup error

May 31st, 2008

A friend of mine asked me today how to run Age Of Empires II on his Asus Eee tiny notebook. While trying to run the game he was getting a Direct Draw error and the game was closing immediately after starting up.

The fix is very easy. You have the Age Of Empires II icon on your desktop. Right click on it and select Properties. On the “Target” field, leave a blank space after the ending quotation mark and then add nostartup

So it should look like this:

(there is a space between the last quotation mark and nostartup)

Click OK and you are ready to play!

About the Asus EEE PC 900

May 24th, 2008

This is my next gadget!

Asus EE 900

Amid the buzz of reaching a new milestone of 1 million Eee PCs sold in just 5 months after its launch, ASUS has provided yet another round of excitement with its release of the new Eee PC 900. This new generation of the ever popular PC packs in a whole range of hardware that includes a 8.9 inch widescreen, a 1.3M pixels webcam and 12GB and 20GB storage capacities for Windows and Linux platforms respectively – catering to wider consumer needs while still maintaining the “Easy to learn, work and play” concept by keeping the overall weight under 1kg.

Mobility is one of the major factors attributed to the Eee PC’s success; and this is in part due to the use of the built-in Solid State Disk (SSD) technology – which offers a quiet, energy saving and shock proof design for stable computing on-the-go. Traditional hard disks spin at 5400 RPM (Revolutions per Minute) – making them more prone to data loss or damage if shocks or bumps are received. Conversely, the Eee PC is able to protect against such incidents, and is the perfect tool for outdoor computing – suitable as an ideal companion for reporters, wildlife photographers and other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.

“Vital feedback from a wide variety of users have been received, which has spurred us on to create more options to cater to different user requirements.” said Jerry Shen, CEO of ASUS.

“Microsoft is excited to be partnering closely with ASUS on the Eee PC development globally,” said Haresh Khoobchandani, Business Marketing Officer, Microsoft Singapore Pte Ltd. “With the ASUS Eee PC 900 providing Windows and Windows-based applications and services, millions of people can benefit from an affordable solution for education, work, communication and entertainment, while providing optimal experience for consumers that seek innovation to its fullest potential.”
