Dealing with the Windows activation error 45131
What a frustration with MS again…
I had to make a clean install of Windows on one of the company’s computers today. And when the time of activation came… error 45131. I am talking about legitimate Windows with valid license, never used on another computer. The CD key was not rejected… the message was saying about a problem while contacting Microsoft. I had normally Internet, no firewall installed yet and I even have put the computer behind the router’s DMZ (which means that all ports from the outside world were open).
Unfortunately I could not find a solution yet. In other forums some users report this problem too since the beginning of May and none of them has managed to activate Windows. It seems that there is a problem with Windows activation servers. Microsoft are you hearing us?

So after 45 minutes on the phone, the support expert tries to tell me that I need a class A ipaddress for the local network interface, and should call them back, once that is accomplished!

It’s an anti piracy measure. Basically, they have tightened up on their re-installation rules. The only way I got round it (genuine key, genuine reason to re-install on the same PC) was to activate by phone, let the number be rejected and then speak to a rep. He asked me a couple of questions (is it only on one PC, was it OEM or retail) and then gave me the activation key. Only took 5 minutes but a right pain in a business environment.
